Art Shows

This is a busy weekend.

This afternoon I have an opening to go to for my students at the Cape Cod Conservatory. What I a fun class I had earlier this spring and they produced great paintings despite themselves.

As soon as I got them away from the beach dune concept they really started growing as painters. I learned a lot as a teacher and grew as well. After taking a long hiatus from teaching, it was refreshing to begin again.

We started each class with a short talk about the work ahead and a demonstration by me to get everyone going and ended each class with a group critique, lining all the paintings up together.

Part of what I cover in my classes is how to frame a painting properly, what to look for. And how to sign a painting, and just getting the work ready to show. So this opening is all part of their learning process.

Then tomorrow I will show for the first time several paintings that are just finished at the First Annual Food and Wine Festival in Hyannis. I think this will be fun to get direct feedback on the new pieces heading to Trees Place next week and to meet and greet with potential customers. Plus I just can’t stand great food and fine wine. It’s really going to be a stretch for me.

This morning I am framing up a painting of Menemsha that has been finished in the studio for a few years now. It’s just one of those paintings that I have never shown before. Last week my framer had an extra frame that just fit this piece and it made it complete. So finally I am showing the Menemsha, Martha’s Vineyard painting that was started on location years ago.

It just needed the right frame.

Murals

Occasionally I have the opportunity to paint murals. I love to paint big so these are always a lot of fun for me.

This is a picture of the first huge mural I did for Mid Cape Racquet Club on Cape Cod. The owner wanted something bright and sunny with a lot of energy for the cardio room. So I did a sunrise with the brightest colors. Today I started my second mural for them and will photograph it in progress for posting.

Studio Work

This week is all about getting ready.

My gold leaf frames have been delivered and my new Fenway Park print editions have finally arrived. I am excited to get some of these new paintings framed and out of the studio on the market. It’s always amazing to see the transformation for a painting when the frame is added, it is like the finishing touch. The right frame can really elevate a piece.

The Palette

I moved my palette closer to the large painting I am working on this weekend. Noticing the assortment of seemingly messy colors. How the paint changes warm to cool, light to dark across the surface, wondering if I am on the right track? Then I hold the palette up to the piece and think…

If it works on the palette it works on the painting.

Recently started two beautiful Fenway paintings. I am very happy with the loose feel of theĀ  scene, trying to convey the atmosphere of excitement and rushing around before a game.

Painting Windows

Continuing to finish up my Beacon Street painting. I knew when I put it on the easel Thursday, it would stay there all weekend. Working on it here and there. Putting the cars in and out, finally removing the three that had been distracting me for weeks. Painting with the overhead lights on and then the lights off, observing the oils on the canvas at various times of day. Finally kicking it into gear this early Sunday morning when I started painting in the windows. It’s fun painting when I leave the details to last.
